Expanded Menta Method Overview

The Expanded Menta Method® (EMM) model is a lens for exploring how adult behavior and the environment affect student learning.  It is an interwoven system of tools and strategies that teaches educators how to manage and organize themselves and the learning environment in order to achieve desired student outcomes.

Educators learn to use the seven Foundational Skill Sets® components and the thirteen Variables of Structure® components to create and maintain Optimal Learning Environmentâ„  conditions where all students can succeed.

Throughout the training program, educators work with an EMM® coach who guides and facilitates their understanding of the EMM® model while creating and maintaining Optimal Learning Environmentâ„  conditions.  The EMM® coach utilizes several core training strategies:

  • EMM® Introductory Modules:  Educators are introduced to the components of the EMM® framework through a series of four introductory modules. Educators complete these modules at their own pace to maximize their learning.
  • EMM® Labs:  Educators participate in a two-day workshop, facilitated by their EMM® coach, where they explore EMM® concepts and components through a series of activities and group discussions.
  • Guided Observations:  Guided by their EMM® coach, educators observe settings throughout their school (such as hallways, lunchroom, playground, and other classrooms).  This provides critical practice in using the EMM® framework and in making connections between the framework and a real school environment.
  • Classroom Coaching:  The EMM® coach observes each educator in action in his or her classroom, followed by a coaching session in which the coach helps the educator use the EMM® framework to reflect on his or her own teaching practice.  Typically, coaching sessions occur weekly over the course of a semester.
